20. Think about the number 20. It’s a simple, even number that in the world of our military veterans has a tremendous significance. 20 is the number of veterans lost every day due to suicide from the side effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and untreated depression. 20 of the bravest men and women lost every day who have thrown themselves into battle protecting the freedoms of every US citizen.
As a 101st Airborne and Iraq veteran, Joshua Jorgensen (Adel, IA), is looking to make “20” a number that only exists in the history books as another chapter in the strong military tradition of the United States Armed Services.
This September (2017), as an event called the “Masked Veteran Running Across Iowa”, Joshua will take on a grueling feat of endurance running 30-40 miles every day as he crosses the state of Iowa wearing a military issued gas mask to raise funds for and awareness of the epidemic of veteran suicide. With the assistance of Team Fidelis of Kansas City, Joshua will begin his journey in Council Bluffs and cross the state ending in Burlington.
Not only will Joshua have the grueling test of running 30-40 miles every day while fighting the heat and humidity of the Iowa fall, he will also have the added difficulty of restricted breathing due to an essential piece of gear being used every day in the constant fight against terrorism all over the world.
